Just an idea.

How about a new messaging system in which users can leave messages for others when they are online or offline.

This could possibly include an inbox/outbox when you access your profile and maybe a small message that can pop up in the chat space to notify you that you have a new message awaiting (when online).

It would work better if only users from your friends list could send you a message (to prevent spamming)

Not sure whether it would be possible to code but i think it would be a nice little idea for the future.

Well if you want to leave them a message - make sure you grab their email adress so you don't have to do it here...for example:

Say you signed up for a league or whatever...and there's 6 players u must play - get their email adress and add them to your adress list.

Simple.
