Okay, so sometimes when I leave my computer for a few hours, I come back and it sounds like its running, but the computer monitor light and the tower (god i don't know if thats the right word) light is blinking. When i click the monitor button to turn it off and then on, it says "no signal". and there is no response if i bang on the keyboard of mouse. then i press and hold the tower power button to turn the computer off, then i turn the monitor off, then i turn the tower back on...and it still doesn't respond. so i turn the tower power off again and back on, and it works just fine...

what in the heck is going on, and how can i prevent it?

How old is your computer? check your power settings in the control panel. It may be going into standby after a certain period then crashing on return. You could change it not to go into standby/hibernation at all (not cool for environmentalists) or set it to automatically turn off (not cool for people who use comp for work, docs etc.)

Either way avoiding the problem is far simpler than fixing it. could well be hardware if she can't get out of standby mode.

its not old at all, i think its only like 2 years old if that... i'm not positive though. yeah it definitely goes into standby mode, and sometimes it comes out just fine just by wiggling the mouse of pressing a button, its just every now and then it goes all finnicky on me. and....its a "he" his name is herman

i'll try to see if i can just avoid the standby mode for awhile (don't throw recycling bins at me tree huggers)

Ya it's the way to do it. To be honest, it's one of those little things that for me, is more effort than it's worth!

BOO!

Well, ok, i shouldn't be a surprise here!

Chec you power settings and substitute anything that says "standby" for "hibernate" (you may have to click "enable hibernation" first.

then, still in power settings, make sure your monitor and hard disks are set to never shut down, but your hibernation settings are what suit you (mine are 30 mins).

You monitor is obviosuly sensible enough to turn off when there's no signal, and hibernation simply starts you where you left off. (with no suckingup of trees and oil, so green people go purple with envy!)

I dont need to tell you sam that your computer needs a good clean. Not with a hoover either! And if your gonna leave your computer running for a couple of hours whilst your away.... ''SHUT IT DOWN'' Alterntaively, do try to shut it down in hibernation mode. If the computer crashes when you re boot using this.... Id run a chkdsk to see if your hard drive is dirty. And if you dont know how to do it, Ask mwa! Even though you will probably give up after 2 section's. The internet has turned you into one

i give up because half the time what you tell me doesn't work, and i don't know how, and i'd rather just have it run slow than go through hours of confusing stuff.

i'm sorry i'm not a computer whizz like yourself...but seriously, lighten up

Ellison, you should no better than to cause even the slightest bit of trouble. I'll be watching you in future. don't think any records have been erased.

Anyway, appreciate the advice, not the attitude.

Although, it's not the hard disk. That doens't cause the comp to die like that. It's probably a discreet setting.

Anyway. No more posts unless they're re;evant, constructive, and nice!

I have no problem with general computer queries in this forum, once it is remember that this section is formal, and for beneficial use only.

If your unsure please read the relevant forum sticky.
