The reset option was only recently introduced and has proved a success.
Before it's introduction, people reset their accounts by deleting/recreating their accounts, which made a mess of forums etc, and left no way of knowing if someone was an actual newbie or not.
With the reset option, it is recorded on someone profile that they have reset so you know.
Many people like to set themselves challenges like how quickly they can reach virtuoso etc, and thats a perfectly valid way to enjoy funkysnooker.
I can't see any relevance in tournaments as everyone is equal in these.

It is recorded, but only for a little while for the public's view. I've made a thread in the past (Though a while ago, so probably locked now) asking if there could just be something put on their main profile page saying how many time's they've reset their stats? For example underneath the age and all that, just say 'Resets: 2' or something like that.
Then if a player has reset and is still a newbie, when they join a room it could maybe say their rank, then just after have an R in brackets, to show that the player has reset?
However, in tournaments where you're playing against them (Which is mentioned here), it doesn't really make a difference if it's a real newbie or a virtuoso newbie, you'd still have to player no matter how good they are, so just play your best the whole time.

true but once they have done 50 entries in their profile, you have to look for it don't you? By this i mean you can easily get rid of the evidence if good enough to get 50+ entries

Well yes and no there. yes some users will be real newbies and some wont, but that wouldn't be an issue due to it being handicapped!
Otherwise i do agree with spinner.
There isn't a problem. even if they're status said virtuoso, you still would have got beat just the same way
