I would like to see some kind of rewards for winning tournaments, say 10pts for the winner 5pts for runner up

Nope, will never happen, as that would just ruin the whole point of the ranking system in place.

Say you was on 995 (unlikely now with new ranking) and if you win 10 points for a tourny, you would be on 1005, which is impossible.
Don't enter them then if you don't think you get a reward.

3) The edge modification: if you approach a very high ranking or a very low ranking your score is reduced.
Ideally, no players should be able to reach the extreme limits of the rankings system. If they do, the system is flawed as we can not differentiate between 2 players on the maximum.
Therefore it is (roughly) exponentially more difficult for players above 900 points to reach 1000 points.
An amount is reduced from scores, this is known as the edge modification
The actual amount is linear, at 900 points you lose 0%; at 950 points you lose 25%. If you get past 950 points it becomes even more severe, eventually resulting in a 100% loss of points at 1000.
The inverse occurs for users with scores below 600.

I guess you haven't read my previous post.
At 1000, you get a 100% reduction of points when you win, so you can't get any more points when you reach it.
And if you kept carrying on, then people who were new to the game would have no chance of getting near the top.

they would if they played enough and won enough

as damee said this is not an option because of the ranking scale and it would be possible to get over 1000 which is impossible because of the edge modification.

Not only that, but it would invalidate the current ranking system.
The system works because, in a simplified way of describing it, there are only so many points to go around, and for someone to win points, someone else has to lose them, otherwise there would be no balance.
This crops up quite often however, and there was a lively debate on pool recently : http://www.funkypool.com/viewTopic.do?topicid=14550
To sumarise, there are a couple of options :
Have tournament games ranked. Not necessarily every tournament, as opinion was divided.
Have a seperate points system for tournaments so you get rewarded in stages from, say, quarter finals.
Qrtr = 1
Semi = 2
Final = 4
Win= 8
I can see both options being good for tournaments as more people will be keen to play if they can gain something without having to win.

I think this would be a good idea, it gives another leaderboard for players to work towards so it would also aspire people to enter more tournaments, which i think would further increase the competitiveness and standard of play at the top. The system may need to be adjusted according to the times of day etc: for example the arcade speed at 10am doesn't even get half as many entrys as the arcade marathon at 7pm.
