I have just finished a game with mission who is listed as a newbie in the 600's, I did not stand a chance as I found out afterwards he was once 980.. He agrees the newbie thing stinks,, why cannot the ratings go on up to 10000 and beyond if necessary.
Everyone would no exactly the quality of the opposition and surely you can have more pride in being someone with a rating of 1220 than a newbie of 625, its like hiding you skill under a tablecloth.
I would think it also would be easier for the guys who run the system.

no one has ever gone passed 1000 on the rankings.and plus u have to think about a lot of players who created users at some point or another will likely delete and at some other point recreated another user..so u will always get newbies that are good and as u said i did not stand a chance against..its just part of the game mate..also the newbie tag is only there for a hundred games..after that its adept,pro,virt..and as no one as ever been past 1000..dont know what comes after that

I'm not understanding this. What has the ratings not going above 1000 got to do with mission being a newbie?

It was only the fact that the last game i played was against mission who is listed as a newbie around 670. So i was not so careful when playing him as I would have been had i known that at some time in the past he had had a rating of 980.
Nothing particular about mission himself, just he turns out to be a
very good example of the point i am making.. I as a player respect him and his ability as i do with all others.

I still don't get how that relates to changing the ratings to going above 1000... Am i missing something here? If he was once 980 then he must of reset his stats or made a new account..

i am sorry its not clear all i am suggesting is that when he got to 980 or anyone else got to 980 or 999 , unless this was the highest regarless how much they tried that they could get to and so they gave up, why didn't they just continue past the 1000 mark.
\\\umless your suggesting that because everyone at the top is so good they keep cancelling one another out.
In the case where like mission they started again and made it quite clear to the authorities,, there should be some way that their rating shows that they were once on top of the heap.

I get it, what he means is why should there be a limit on rank? Surely having a never endless highest rank available would good and stop a lot of people resetting.

Thus the reason the newbie modification is there so the amount you win/lose is reduced.
help page said:
2) The newbie modification: if you play a newbie the points that you play for are reduced.
New user's are given a trial period of 100 games. During this period they are called newbies, and these 100 games allow the user to approach their correct ranking.
However as we are unsure of their correct ranking during this period we reduce the opponent's gain or loss in score.
This will prevent you losing a lot of score if the user is actually a very adept player, and stop you picking up a lot of points against a very weak player.
This is known as the newbie modification, and you can see this value if you turn on the stats in the options.
The maximum reduction is 80%, gradually reducing to 0% as the user approaches 100 games.
Ironically, newbies own scores are not effected by the newbie modification.
