Watching the Masters final now and playing on FS, I have realised that the sounds are really different.
1. When the ball hits the cushion in real snooker, unless it's a bit hit, it'll make very little, if any noise. Every cushion hit on FS and it sounds like it's hitting a hollow wall!
2. The ball contact noise is very sharp, it doesn't sound 'under control' if you know what I mean. In real snooker it sounds more 'dull' and controlled.
If you're watching the final now, have a look and compare!

In order to make it shot-specific, you would have to tie the sound to the shot strength (don't know how Nick feels about this).
I'm pretty sure the current sounds were recorded during a major tournament about a year ago

When they were first brought out Nick said to listen to shots being played in a video on youtube and they were pretty much the exact same as on here.
Granted, you dont really hear anything of the balls hitting cushions when you watch it on tv.

i would prefer sound as you pot a ball.
example:
pot a red - commentator speaks 1
black - 8
etc
doing this you wouldn't have to look at scoreboard so your full focus can be on the table.

Ball to ball sound is snooker specific (from a sound clip of snooker) but it is dynamically altered for loudness and panned for stereo purposes. It should sound very similar to a snooker game, but remember it is dependent on your sound card and your PC speakers. Try as g_echo_l mentioned, listen to a YouTube snooker video as you play.
Ball to cushion sound is from a pool table sound - it could be reduced or faded completely for snooker.
