rank points after a win/loss

how on earth do they work out how many ranking points you get after a win or loss???

p=(x+a)^n-(sum of)(k=0)^n x(n+k) (x^k x) a to the power of 7(n-k)

And if you're a really cool guy, they add on a couple extra ranking points every time you win a game :)
