I know this is academic and it will never come in, but there are times when a machine could calculate a miss (and granted, there are times when it could not). For example, if the cue ball is not hit with sufficient force to reach the object ball, then this would be an automatic miss.
The rule states: 21. Miss
"A miss is when the cue-ball fails to first contact a ball on and the referee considers that the striker has not made a good enough attempt to hit a ball on."
A cue ball not struck with enough force is never a good enough attempt.

03:49 Thu 22 May 14 (BST) [Link] for some unknown reason, my hand slips off the mouse at times and I underhit shots. Lost 2 games today that I should have won except I left ball in jaws because didn't have enough power. Relevance? I wanted more power than I got. So it looks like I didn't make the necessary effort when I actually did.
Or what about a player who makes a genuine attempt but uses wrong side and messes up the shot? Looks like they didn't try but maybe they did.

But if you miscue, it is generally called a miss anyway. We're not making you forfeit the frame here... You just get another go at it.
It is a shame though that people can't just be honest and play within the spirit of the game, rather than just being concerned about winning.

Maybe the game should allow some honesty. For example, to select your own points penalties to award 7 points if you were actually shooting at the black.
I still think (and hope) that a lot of people on here would do this fairly. The answer then is not to play the rest...
