Engine coolant is water and antifreeze so adding water and a cleaner to that shouldn't make the engine smoke unless is crosses from water to oil, either by putting it in the wrong opening or via a blown head gasket.

If you have done as you say, all that should be required is a drain down and refill.

Spot on G, fill it up and turn on the engine with the coolant cap on! You can then see if it has a leak anywhere! If this is going in the oil check the oil cap! For scum, Head gasket would be the main issue if you are seeing smoke!
