Didn't answer this bit.
Not 100% reliably no. A person could always "accidently on purpose" cause his network to fail.

Is there any way of the server differentiating between a user initiated close and a bad connection?

I think the only wat to plausibly solve this problem is to allow a user continue on with their break after their opponent left. Couldn't there be a way of hiding the game from other users so that they can't see it and therefore can't join, while the game continues on until the break is over?

or perhaps you could stop players from leaving rooms, the majority would just stick it out rather than disconnect just to stop your break.
Though it wouldnt cancel everyone leaving (disconnecters) it would solve a lot of leavers spoiling breaks.

Well then we can differentiate between network failures and user closures as surely if 'x'ing the window is unlikely then running downstairs to restart your modem will never happen!

we could maybe bring out a new officaial funkysnooker rule
stating that if a player leave's after the opponant has not allowed the other player to finish there break..
boot the player for unsportsman like conduct.
just an idea

madhatters idea sounds best to me, it would be hard to enforce tho.

If the player leaves on a big break is there not anyway in which they can be 'booted'. As in, If they click the close icon they should be unable to log back in for 15 minutes for example?, That could be a punishment.

My idea on what should happen:
Lose triple or double points regardless of connection failure...harsh but fair.

Well, maybe from taking a screenshot and sending it to the site.
Don't know how to send a PIC to the site though.

u should only get booted if it was on the other players break, and there would need to be an update for that to happen

If a player leaves to the members bar or a game then it couldn't possibly be their internet connection.
Yes, it could be faulty or somewhat unstable at the time, but what difference would leaving to another room have on your connection? Surely they would show some respect and let their opponent finish their turn first?
It could be something worth checking if it happens, then it effectivly rules out the fact that it was a loss/fault of internet connection.
Other than that, what could it be? Personal distraction (called away or toilet emergencey for example)? If so, then why leave the game if you are going to lose anyway?
If the 'bailer' simply leaves to another room, then there is a fairly high chance that he/she left purposely for your displeasure.
Even if this is not the case, it is highly coincidental that someone loses their internet connection in the miner space of seconds it takes for the opponent to gain one more point for a half century!
By this idea madhatter, do you mean an automatic boot? If so, this is a fairly good idea (if the reason was due to loss of connection, it wouldn't matter anyway, but will sort out a fair percentage of offenders).
However, would it be slightly difficult to add (if it was automatic)? First you would have to think of a break range for the input to trigger it. between 48 and maximum for example? Or would that be too harsh?

thanks for the essay farren lol,
perhaps if you're on a 30+ break and the other player leaves through his own will, there will be a game announcement showing the break and that the player had just left that game so surely that could hand out an automatic boot?

That's was in my list (im me noggin)
yes totally agree with farren, The automatic boot would be a really good idea save's people pming the moderator's all the time with people leaving there game's problem's
the offending player would get a immediate kick from the site if they leave a game when the player is say... has a break of 20 and over.
so there is a really no need to get a moderator involved.
and farren u say that it would only sort out a fair percentage but im fact to my opinion it would sort out quite a bit if you ask me... players leave the games to stop the player getting a big break.. cause they maybe are annoyed with there playing's.
i hold my hand's up and say it cause i have left game's just not on big break's and i always say gg or wp and tell them im leaving.
u can ask funky_al he slaughtered me in a torny final one time, he was on fire form and i had one shot and missed and he had a shot and get a 50+ break and i never left i think i had about 3 point's in the whole game..
anyhow this all should be sorted out soon as nick has the time.
