there was at one point a plan to charge for a premium version, but nick decided to concentrate on the free aspect of the game, if i had to pay to play i would unfortunatly leave, but hey we dont so its hypothetical

From the help center:
Often we are asked "why is the game free?" or "are we going to charge a user subscription in the future?"
Well, the policy has always been to take a long term view. We have never launched pop-up windows or sold email addresses to junk mail senders to make some fast money. Basically we would prefer 10,000 happy users than 1,000 disgruntled users being assaulted with pop-ups and spam email (even if the 1,000 generated more cash). Currently we have 33,481 registered members.
We make revenue through the adverts, which are unobtrusive, and we try to ensure they do not adversely affect game play.
The core game will always be free!
I would pay personally, but it's not the case and never will be for the core game.

I would pay, however, if my parents gave me the money.
