Carry on potting!

At approximately 3:20AM on April 10, 2008, a serious wind- and thunder-storm hit the Dallas/Fort Worth area, knocking out power to a reported 180,000
customers. Technicians switched the building over
to generator power. During the changeover, a few issues were encountered, including a blown fuse which was replaced by our 2 on-staff licensed
electricians. Our electricians also found that several roof air conditioning units were damaged by the 80+-mile-per-hour winds in the storm.

They were repaired with spare parts onsite. In the interim, we made the difficult decision to power down servers that could have been affected by the heat.

TXU, the local energy provider, originally gave an estimated time of resolution of 8AM, and at 7:30, they revised their ETR to 12PM. At 10:30AM, TXU advised that there was substantial damage to the Bedford substations and they would no longer be able to give an ETR.

Additional support was called in starting at 3:30AM and our electricians, Call Center, and Data Center staff worked to resolve localized issues with customer equipment. TXU restored power at 10PM and generators were placed on stand-by in case of additional power drops. None were experienced. Data Center staff and Technical Support technicians have worked round-the-clock to resolve any outstanding issues with customer equipment. Our staff recognizes that our customers' server availability is the highest priority and regrets any downtime you may have experienced. With the help of a consultant, we are revising all of our disaster response policies and procedures and have begun conducting regular drills to ensure every precaution has been taken.
