How is it chosen who will break off in the first frame? Is it random or not?

The break off shot in the first frame is random. The break off shot alternates between players for subsequent frames.

If you only play one frame and then leave, you may get 2 or 3 break shots in a row. However the chance of you getting a break off shot in the first frame is the exact same chance as getting heads or tails when flipping a coin.
