Any fee would have to apply to accounts. Users should have no more than one account and if the user got banned or decided to deactivate just after donating, then that is their own decision.

I think I am correct in saying that two accounts to one IP address isn't against the rules if those accounts are for separate people? Perhaps a father and son who both regularly use Funkysnooker..

Having read all the comments so far, I fully support Nick's proposal. Although I have never suffered from lag due to adverts, I know many members have (I particularly like the O2 advert when playing redrebellion (only joking))

I do however, have a problem with visible indications being applied (e.g. special logo, member type, etc.) on principle. It has been my experience (having been involved for many years in an organisation that regularly raises funds by member donation) that, whenever there is a visible indication of donation or not, it produces the perception of a two-tier membership status based on ability to pay. Members who are not in a position to donate (for whatever reason) may feel that they are embarrased, stigmatized and treated differently (however unjustified). Also, unfortunately, on rare occasions (and I emphasise on rare occasions) members who have contributed have used it to promote the fact that they are 'better members'.

Yeah preferential treatment can't happen, e.g members only getting promoted to mod because they are making small payments, but having been a mod for a while, i'm sure that would never happen

I like the idea of paying for membership... i know this site will always be free, but could you have this for an option with extras such as.... Monthly ranked tourneys.... Only members can be promoted to mod/admin, New felts, New cues, Prehaps non paying people can only reach 800+ not virtuoso?

Note I have no plans to change the current service or that a user will get any additional features.

Most of those suggestions you made sound a little harsh zero_pulse. Especially not being able to reach 900+ rank if you don't pay. I'm just glad Nick has no plans to do anything like that

I understand that, since they'd want to do their bit for the site. But what about younger users who can't pay because their parents won't let them? Its not right on them to not let them have certain things, not because they won't pay, but because they can't pay.

True, but i'm just trying to think outside the box, runescape has so many different features for members compared to free users.

I've mentioned this before, but how about members could rename certain players on friends list such as

Ste_efc = Ste

Wins 0... 0%
Loses 10... 100%
Abandoned 0... 0%

Virtuoso107 = Mike

Wins 3... 60%
Loses 2... 40%
Abandoned 1... 10%

At the end of the day jon, iamtheworst is right. This site is open to people of all ages and not all of them can pay for it.

Yeah most people will probably pay for it (or so they say) there will never be as many users as there is now!

Keep in mind that in his original post, Nick mentioned 2 reasons people usually want to pay for:
- they just want to contribute
- they don't want to see adverts, and are ready to pay for that

For me, this means that the only big change that would be brought by payments would be the adverts disappearing.

As for the fact that most users would pay, I'm absolutely not sure about it. Among important reasons of the game's popularity, are that it's free, and doesn't require a registration; take away any of these 2 things, and the game popularity will suffer a lot.

John I strongly disagree with your ideas about premium users only being promoted, being able to get upto 900 rank etc etc (sorry )

Premium users will get no adverts and the knowledge they are helping pay for the site. Simple.

I don't think new ideas should need to come into it though. premium membersget a warm feeling in the pit of their stomach knowing that they are helping to keep the site going, and in return for that don't have to look at the deal or no deal advert! That should be a big enough incentive

But then i'm biassed, I won't be paying for funkysnooker

I like this idea at least the part of being able to put real names by Funky names, brilliant for people with a memory like mine ( I have a piece of paper next to laptop now with names on) Although I don't think it should need to be paid for. I did ask about this, over a year ago, so I guess it wasn't thought worthwhile

Edit for typo's (as usual)
