Personally I think Shay Given is one of the best, if not the best goalie in the premiership. I think its about he gets a chance at a bigger club! He should go.

I totally agree with everything you said above, Shay Given has given the premiership and Newcastle so much over the last couple of years and as you said he is certainly up there with the best too ever play in the premier league. He deserves to play at the top before he retires, sorry Tom.

If it wasn't for given newcastle would be relegated. He needs to be somewhere bigger, now there is no denying that newcastle are a big club but I think he needs to move to bigger, better clubs. Arsenal would be perfect for him I think. Oh and I'm sure the newcastle fans would not begrudge given moving after all he has done for them.

Arsenal have Almunia, Liverpool have Reina, utd have Van Der Sar and Chelsea have Cech. I dont think Given is the best in the prem, he is very good, but goalkeepers such as Reina go unnoticed. What I like about Reina is how quickly is he is off his line, he is basically our sweeper, which has been key to our success defensively. Now of all the top 4, Arsenal have the worst keeper, but he is still a good keeper. I can't see where he could move to basically, Arsenal don't have the money, Liverpool, Utd and chelsea are already catered for.
I would much rather Shay statyed at Newcastle, but could see the advantages of him moving to a club which is challenging for honours, I just can't see which club would be interested, maybe City but thats not much of a step up atm.

Typical Scouser attitude.
Given Is miles out of Reina's league.
If Given played for Liverpool he would be the best keeper in the world right?

I got to disagre i don't think he is as good as you are all making out, hes not in the league of reina, chec or van der sar, he might do well at arsenal becuase almunia is nuthing special, don't get me wrong he is a cracking keeper but not 'the best'
And before anybody says anyhtig no I don't think sorensen is the best either

Reina's a great keeper, won the golden glove (most clean sheets) award last 3 seasons running so what does that say about our goalkeeper and defense?

Dont talk rubbish. As I said Reina does things which don't get noticed by the usual follower. He is off his line like a shot, booting the ball clear, meaning he doesn't have to pull off the spectacular saves like Given does. And if Reina played for Newcastle, you would appreciate him more, and when he does need to make saves he is still right up there. Just look at his penaty save record, he has the best in Europe. But you are right in one thing. Given is miles out of Reinas league

Ben Foster needs to leave united, is he still 3rd choice? The most over rated keeper in the prem is Joe Hart, I have never seen him save anything which looked unstoppable, he is average. The most under rated keeper was Anti Niemi in his prime.
Just thinking if Buffon moved to city then maybe Shay could have a shot in Italy.

Hang on, did any of you see how Shay Given played against Liverpool? To be honest, there's no other 'keeper in the Premier League who could have done what he did in that game.
He is world class, and you can't deny that. You can't just look at records and stats to say which keepers are good, if you looked at that for Given he'd be near the bottom, simply because Newcastle are crap defensively.
I will be gutted if he leaves, but there wont be any Newcastle fan who thinks they've been hard done by him. He's been an incredible servant for this club and has been extremely loyal.
He's stuck it out for 11 years with us and is finally getting fed up, and can you blame him? He puts in a world class performance yet concecdes 5 goals, he deserves far better.
As a Newcastle fan, he should stay. As a football & Shay Given fan, he should probably go, he could have been winning stuff for the past 11 years, but instead he's been scrapping about saving us game after game, he deserves to be in a team challenging for honours season after season.
If he does leave, we do have a good replacement in Steve Harper who has been even more loyal than Given, Harper could walk into most Premier League teams as well. Also, we've got Tim Krul coming up the ranks who looks clas. Was outstanding in his only first team game, against Palermo. Clean sheet and Man of The Match.

Thought i'd just mention that Liverpool got a clean sweep on Sky Sports, best defender was Carra, best midfielder was Gerrard and best striker was Torres, sadly they didn't do a goal keeper one or I reckon Reina would have got it. IMO keepers and strikers work in reverse, good strikers need good midfielders in their team to show what they can do, whereas keepers need a bad defense. Petr cech for example would outshine Given if put in the geordie team, of that I am sure.
People are too quick to say that Reina, Cech and Edwin are over rated cos of their defenses, I reckon its the other way around.

Exactly. Given has been loyal, but he's been our first keeper in all that team, Harper has been at the club longer as Newcastle's second keeper ever since Given came but hasn't said anything about leaving.
Far more loyal, it's a shame he's been at a club with a goalkeeper such as Shay Given because he could be playing week in week out at most other clubs as well.

How can you be so sure of that when Petr Cech has never been in a situation where he's got a crap defence in front of him? And Given hasn't really been in a situation where he's had a top class defence in front of him (Not in the time I can remember anyway) He may be a bit better, but he certainly wouldn't 'outshine' him.

Everyone had forgot about Given as well before his display against Liverpool, on the last words a few weeks ago Andy Grey asked who was asked "whos the best in the prem: Reina or Friedal?" no mention of given at all.
This is making me sound like I think Given is crap, he is easily in the top 5.

I dont know wether to respect Harper or tink that he has a lack of ambition, sitting on the bench all his carreer and getting paid for the pleasure is great. But maybe one day he'll wish he left. The same can be of Solkshear (or however you spell it).
