How is it ( seemingly) possible that some peole can play a shot quite a few seconds after the timer has run out? Lag? mmmm...

Actually, the timer is just an indicator. On their screen, they took the shot before the timer ran down. However, that information then has to pass from their computer, to the server, and then back to your computer.
Depending on internet connections, this could take anyway from a millisecond upto over a minute.
This is why it seemed like they took their shot after the timer ran down.

cool, but isn't that something else (usual msg "___ isn't responding" etc.)- seems a coincidence that we're both playing shots instantaneously, both with good connections then, at a moment when extra time is needed to take a shot, the opposing player seems to acquire it, just when it is needed, when there has been no evident delay throughout the game? A ten second game makes this more apparent. (also seems to be the pros who acquire this luck)....

They don't get extra time, they get the same amount of time in every single shot.
As mooney_147 said, look at the link. It confirms what I previously said.
