Would it be better, if you could cap your own thread.

So if your thread is out of date or does not be used anymore and would be better of capped, you have the authority to do so.

Or maybe you could just pm a mod, and ask permission to cap your thread, saving the mods time looking for the thread.

And you could have the possibility to un-cap it, incase the discussion about the idea changes, therefore bringing the idea back up and creating less threads for the same idea.

Thoughts please

If a moderator thinks that a thread should be capped, then it will be capped. If it was down to the creator of the thread it would just mean that there would be loads more capped threads when they shouldn't have been.

I can see this only being used in cases where a thread about the same topic has been created multiple times in quick succession.

Which leads me to say.. why not just do a forum search to save the hassle?

Power to the people

Its one of them, moderators will hate it cos they wouldn't have as much power, but members would love it cos they would have a bit more power.

But what you got to remember is, moderators are chosen because they can be trusted, members aren't chosen.

Would you trust certain memebers with a cap button? It would be capped, uncapped, capped uncapped and so on. Basically would make the forum look a mess.

Shame really because in essence a good idea, but as with most things the minority who couldn't be trusted ruin for everybody else. Such is life

?

It would mean much less "power" to members, as they wouldn't have so many options to help threads grow and change over time.

There has been a funny growth in the "cap this" phenomenon over the past year or so for some strange reason, so perhaps it was inevitable this idea would crop up.

In reality, capping threads early is one of the worst things that can be done to any forum, with the obvious exceptions of the reasons threads are capped here; those being direct duplication, and abusive/personal situations.

I think a better idea though would be the ability for moderators to merge similar threads together.

Maybe another idea is to cap (or delete?) all threads that haven't had a post for (say) six months.

I've seen over the years a lot of odd things happening when someone posts to a thread that was wildly out of date, sort of re-opening old wounds.

When it's dead, kill it.

Whats the point in capping a thread at 6 months?
1. It will be god knows how many pages down the line.
2. It would automaticly be acrhived at 6 months with no posts after that.

As x-mod on pool i see no reason for members to have a cap button, it would get confussing seeing a thread, like say for this one coming up with...

{CAPPED}Capping your own thread.
(day later)
Capping your own thread.
(2 hours later)
{CAPPED}Capping your own thread.
and so on.

leave it to the mod/admins as it is there job in the end, also if you spot a thread that breaks the rules just let a mod/admin know and give them the link and they will look into it.

I think once a thread is inactive for 6 months it automatically becomes capped.

Why cap when after 6 months this shows
"This thread has not been updated for 6 months and therefore has been archived"

Threads are capped when they're inactive for 6 months. They're archived and capped.
