this thread is for all ideas regarding carom:
I think 1st to 5 in a game is too easy and should be raised to 1st to 10 (tournies would stay 1st to 5 as it would be quick).
1st to 2 in carom final like other tournies.
please comment and post your ideas about carom

For some that is true, but for beginners or infrequent players that is not the case. In fact, if two inexperienced players are playing, it is often the case that one or both gets bored and leaves or doesn't bother playing again.
I think, I would therefore slightly modify the basic idea and have the no. of points selectable when creating a room (similar to shot duration and rank limits). In fact you could then reduce the points required (say to 3) for the aforementioned beginners.
The downside is of course that this could lead to abuse (i.e. the good players that can guarantee winning the lag putting low limits to gain quick easy wins)

I personally have thought about the point system alot.
I think raising it to 10 has advantages and disadvantages.
I think raising it to 7 would be ideal for all carom players, i think 10 benefits the better player too greatly.

However i dont think it should be lowered from 5.
There has been loads of previous people who didnt understand the rules, but from me explaining to them how to play, quickly developed into being able to hit 3 runs and some even more.
5-7-9 I think that would be a nice selection.

Choosing points amount would be abused and dont think it would work to be honest,

Drop down box with 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 25 and 50? Thats much better than having the option to type in how many points you want the game to end at...

1. I personally dont think the idea of choosing the number of points is bad but i prefer my thought:
5 is too less, becuase anyone that is able to get a 5+ run has normally won the game in most cases.
AND 50!!! This is really too much. People would take ages just to finish the first 100 games for losing their newbie tag.
In my opinion the best solution for this problem is to raise the number of points for a Win to 10. And that for every game except in tournies.
There it should still be on 5 just to let it as quick as it is but the quarters and semis should be 1st to 2
and the Final 1st to 3
If you dont agree with me and ull stay on the possibility to choose the number im for: 10, 15, 20;
And another idea by me:

i love the "race to" idea. would be great for clan matches especially, but also for general play

Destiny, whilst I appreciate your opinion, I have to say that it is from the perspective of one of the 'elite few' that, having reached (and exceeded) a certain standard, require more of a challenge. However, taking the broader view, there a far more beginners/less experienced player that need to be catered for and afforded the same courtesy that experienced players enjoyed when they were starting out . If you wish that Carom should become more popular (and I suppose there are some who don't so that they can maintain their private club), then making it less attractive by extending the number of points required by default is certainly not the thing to do - people are even more likely to get bored. By way of example, your reaction to the suggestion that 50 should be included as an option is exactly how people would feel if the minimum were 10 - it is all a matter of scale.

I like all the ideas and think it would been a good option to be able to change the number of points required to win just like choosing the number of players for a killer match.
5,9,15 and 20 would be the ideal numbers. 50 is to much for any carom player, for the newbies who are not familiar with carom would be a painful experience as it would take all day.
I think there is no way 50 can be implicated in this IMO.

You're all saying 50 is too much like its going to be the default requirement. Nobody has to select 50, but whats wrong with having the option for it?
Personally, I think 5 is about right. Then again, I can barely string a run of 3 together, never mind 13. Rather than changing the default, change it so we have the option of selecting more.
