I am interested to know what criteria are taken into account when deciding which words are censored with asterisks and which are allowed to remain. I understand that most profanities, racial slurs and sexual terms are not allowed - and completely agree with this rule - but there are some major inconsistencies. There are many derogatory terms for black people, and people with certain illnesses which are not banned (I won't say which), but words such as "***" (which is a bird), "****" (which is a diminutive of the name Richard) and "*****" (which is the German word for cabbage), are. The last one particularly irritates me as a German speaker - how have we got the the point where people can't even use words in their own language while chatting to each other in private message windows, just because a few insensitive idiots still use the word to slur the German people? This is not an appeal to have all swear words allowed. That would be moronic. Just be consistent. Only ban a word if it has no other meaning.

Mik, do you seriously think users of this site are calling someone a cabbage in German?
Do you seriously think that the name for Richard will be used in that sense?
No...you dont. So why bother with this fella?
Plus you needed to spell the word incorrectly for it to of displayed!

Yes, certain words are obviously filtered, and other than that the filtering system is based on what happens on the site (trends observed in chat), and as language in general evolves.
It's worth remembering that the site has a worldwide userbase, so terms which may have devolved into normal useage in some places, can still be considered very offensive in others.
Also remember as per the sites terms of service, to which all users agree when signing up, the sites language is english.

I would have thought that was obvious due to the sexual connotations.
In fact, it is obvious, as are all the others if you think about them, and given that this is the way this topic goes every time it comes up I think its best to pre-empt any problems and cap the thread.
As always, contact us is avaliable should you wish to address any related issues directly.
