Just to add another dimension (and may I point out first that I think the "R" idea is a good one); what are your opinions of multiple "R's", for members who reset on more than one occasion?
This does occur, e.g. when a player first starts, is learning, and never gets his / her rank up that high.
Then when he / she gains in confidence and / or skill, and achieves a certain level, he / she may decide to reset again, to set new challenges.
As has been mentionned though, if you are that concerned, just create a room with the rank level you wish to play at.

only problem with that is if you have someone like fuzzy who likes to reset on nearly a daily basis.
would be like...
Carom Friendly - dgeneratio (Adept) vs fuzzy (Newbie, RRRRRRRRRRRR)
this may work though

There isn't a need for this. Notice how its in general, relatively new and inexperienced players posting this topic of thread up? Its blunt to say, but just move on and learn from it.

I wouldn't differentiate between someone who has reset once or ten times (at least not for ranking reasons).
I solved this problem for myself by just refusing to play any newbie in ranked games. The conversation with buddy earlier was more of a theoretical one for me.

Yeah, I was referring to the opening post of this thread mate. He'll hopefully take your method up of not playing newbies in ranked games.

22:30 Sat 15 Jan 11 (GMT) [Link] Why wouldnt it disappear? Based on your theory the R is only to show that a player has reset and thus may not necessarily be on their true rank. Once they are back at their proper rank then surely they shouldnt have it anymore since its irrelevant if they have reset. (sort of beside the point anyway)
The whole idea of introducing the reset option was to minimise deactivation and recreation of new accounts. The introduction of a system to highlight resetters will have two consequences:
1) people with R's getting less games because people will be afraid to play them
2) an increase in people deactivating instead of resetting.that is only true for the proportion of players who are interested in rank. All those people who were happy to sit on 800 or who have no interest in rank are not really having their skill levels represented by their rank. Completely agree

hmpf, and here I hoped I successfully extracted myself from the thread...
that is only true for the proportion of players who are interested in rank. All those people who were happy to sit on 800 or who have no interest in rank are not really having their skill levels represented by their rankAnyone who plays tournaments or ranked games will have a roughly accurate rank. It is not possible anymore to avoid ranked games since the "tourneys are ranked" update. (Even for great players just returning now, the ranking shoots up within 1-2 tournaments, ex. kaison a few weeks ago).
Maybe another effect will be a reduction of resetters to avoid the "r"? We're all just speculating here with such predictions...

Sure, it could disappear once they have reached the vicinity of their previous rank i guess. I just figured if I keep it simple, it is more likely to be implemented...

there is no problem for friendlies anyway, since that doesn't reduce rank. as soon as you start playing tourneys, your ranking will approach the "correct" numbers rapidly

You can't talk about tournaments for 2 big reasons
1) You have no choice but to play them once the draw has been made in a tournament anyway, so there is no need to see the "r"
2) They'll have lost newbie status by then, so their rank won't be too faroff their true rank anyway
The only place this "r" is worthwhile is normal ranked games, and that's only while they are in newbie stage.
Overall I don't think this would really work.

Isn't this dealt with anyway by the reduction in points when playing a newbie? If i reset and play a virtuoso and win they hardly lose any points.
I reset occasionally to set myself a challenge and I never try and kid someone that i'm a newbie (although i play like one sometimes)

In a ranked game against a 675 newbie, I would lose more than losing to the same guy at his usual rank (talking about 800+).
More importantly, I would win a lot less than I should for beating a good player.

Eemad's point is after the 30 ranked games required before a person can enter a tournament, that person should be close enough to their proper ranking so as a result you cant play them in a tournament.
I dont see the need for an R. People would just avoid them. So just avoid 675 Newbies. Its the same thing really

That's what I do now.
The "r" would've been a lot more useful back when the newbie stage was 100 games long.
I still think it has its merits. Maybe put the "r" on the profile stats rather than next to the name? That way, the people who don't care won't see it. I like knowing whether someone has their original record rather than a reset one. Even if just for statistical purposes.
But the need has certainly decreased since the 30 games-newbie update.
