That's the question.
I'll play anyone off their correct rank but I'm getting fed up with the number of re-set players who you play who's stats are
something like:
newbie - played 10 - won 10 - highest break 98 etc etc.
Screws the ranking points and spoils the spirit of the game.
Is it possible to view a prospective opponents stats before you agree to play them, they're pretty easy to spot when you look at the sats.
I can't see why ppl re-set anyway.

1st question, look at profile before you play.
2nd people reset to set challenges for themselves or just feel like it.

You can open their profile by clicking on their picture. You must have popups allowed for this though.
alternatively, buddytobud has created a ranking calculator that shows you what ranking points you will win/lose by playing any player. The other thing it does however is shows you their stats so you can see if they are "spoiling the spirit of the game" or not

See people reset because as James said to set a challenge, they may want to get 100% win to be a virt or something other people reset because their Match Stats are not upto scratch and now they believe they are better players and think they can preform better
But it doesnt matter as I have said numerious times, people who are Ranked 600 or 900 I still want to beat them so it doesnt bother me

Said it a while ago, just a little (R) or something next to their name if they have re-set at least gives you an indication of the possibility you're actually playing a really experienced player despite their 'newbie' status...

Nice idea toon, wouldn't be any of the "I didn't know they've reset" crapp and no hassle e.g stupid childish comments made...

But what about players that were perhaps not very good, but decided to reset their stats?
If people knew they had reset, they might not play them incase there previous rank was good, meaning they may get less games.
I don't think it matters if somebody resets. End of the day, if you lose to someone who you suspect is better than what their rank suggests, then go and play somebody else.

i think the whole point of such a system would be to avoid having to play them in the first place? we're trying to get past the trial by error system.

Got to agree with jack_pot there, if you are worried about a player having reset then just create a room with a rank filter on it. It seems to me that people complaining about not knowing whether a player is a real 700 or just a resetter working his way back up are the ones that only play lower ranked players in the attempt to win cheap points. Cant have it every way lads

I don't care much about this anymore, but when I'm playing someone who is at 700 but should really be 850, then I think I should get the points I deserve for beating a good player if I win and not lose an outrageous amount of points.

But what is the difference between, resetters and someone who has recently had a run of bad form or been away for a week or two and fallen foul of the daily reduction in ranking?

Everyone can be slightly low due to bad form, but that is legitimate. No one goes down to 700 from 900 due to bad form.
Daily reduction for even a month would be only 15 points.
I just don't see much harm in adding a little "r" or something else that's been suggested.

Ok, so a little R takes care of people who reset, but whats the solution to people who deactivate and start with a new account?
and out of interest, when would the R disappear?

I still can't see what the difference is though and certainly can't see why there is an implication that resetting your stats is in some way not legitimate. Also, the 'R' does not cater for newish players that are good - either because they are naturally gifted, have been playing as a guest for a long time before 'taking the plunge' or have deactivated and started a new account (the name Fuzzy immediately springs to mind ). If anybody is really worried about it, then a look at their stats would quickly reveal their true ability (this goes for the so called 'fake newbies' too).
Edit:
Good point.

The "r" does not disappear.
There is nothing we can do about the people who deactivate and start a new account. This is irrelevant in my eyes, because it doesn;t mean we can't do something about the people who reset.
(This refers to bad form vs resetting)- The difference is if I lose to chase when he's down to 850 due to bad form, I will lose about 5 points, whereas if he resets and is down to 700, I will lose about 15 points (double for tourneys). Big difference if you care about rank.
Your rank represents your skill level. If you have reset and are at 700 instead of 850, I don't want to play you because I have little to gain from beating a great player, but loads to lose from losing to a great player. The representation of your skill (rank) is not legitimate in that sense. Maybe there's a better word for it, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Erm, hang on a mo, you are comparing losing to Chase at rank 850 to losing to Chase at 700 and yes, surprise surprise, you would lose more! My point is, what is the difference between a 'previously bad form Chase' at 850 and a 'reset Chase' at 850 (and lets face it, it wouldn't take him long to achieve that)? Edit: or even a 'new kid on the block of Chase's ability' at 850?

There is no problem with a reset chase at 850, because then he's already taken advantage of all the other people who got ripped off from losing to a great player but still lost loads of points.
The problem is during the stage when he's still 700, which he would never get to if he didn't reset...
It doesn't have to be an "r". The option to retain the highest rank with resets was brought up, but this does not seem possible because it is not saved (or something).

Must have been doing the edit at same time you were posting, sorry. That doesn't take into account the 3rd case I did in that edit.

Referring to your edit: There's nothing wrong with someone at 850, because then I won't get ripped off on rank!
This is about losing more than you should and winning less than you should against players with false ranks due to reset. With an 850, I can see that I'm playing a great player; with a chase at 700, I can't see that I'm playing a great player
