Whilst I am always open to constructive criticism, I think your post overlooks the fundamental conjugation of the verb "to spell".
You will find a full chart detailing the various tenses in the link below:

Spelled is the correct word you are looking for which is To name or write in order the letters constituting (a word or part of a word).

The French have a saying, roughly translated as:
"We'll go to sleep less stupid tonight"
"We'll go to sleep less stupid tonight"
Oh, and the OED is still a valid source of information too, so I'll take G's reply in my favour too lol

Actually all joking aside there are a lot of people on here to whom English is not their 1st language. It could be helpful to them.
Also people with dyslexia and possibly people with other special needs may be able to benefit from it.
As well as people who don't have english GCSE - yes it's true some people don't
I think something to remember here is, just because it is easy for some does not mean it is for others.
I think the OP brought up a valid suggestion and it has brought forth some good debate and some good alternatives, this does not automatically mean it will or should happen, but, I for one think it was worth bringing up

Grae, that is very well thaught. Alot of people from different countries don't use English as a first language and try hard when posting on the forums, so something like this would definatly benifit them!
