I've been on this site for a fair few years now(virtuoso107), seen my fair share of updates with most of them going down pretty well bar the obvious whining at first but usually people get used to them...
Anyway, only just started really playing again and the first thing I find is that there is a ridiculous amount of tournaments a day, obviously accompanied by "micro" tournaments and with and I quote "tournapoints" available let's not leave that out. Is the site trying to destroy all achievement behind winning a tournament? With so many a day there really isn't a real sense of achievement when winning one.
What I propose it's pretty drastic, infact by the looks of the direction the site is being pushed, extremely drastic! Put tournaments back to 5 or 6 a day with a 128 person limit how it used to be, when every tournament was filled with competitive skillful players.
Winning a tournament back when it was like that had the upmost achievement and did a hell of a lot for your playing reputation.
Now I'm not saying current winners of tournaments aren't worthy to win i'm just saying it would be much more interesting to be put them all into a proper tournament. Rant over.

just counted these Tournaments in 1 day (could be more however as it doesn't show over 24 hours)...
22/36 Arcade (16/36 Micro)
5/36 Original
4/36 Regular
2/36 Power
1/36 Carom
1/36 Random
Before Micro there was 9 Arcade Tournaments
Micro wouldn't be so bad if...
A) Less than Currently
or
B) Variety with different game types
now that to me proves there are too many Arcade Tournaments for my liking was too many Arcade before but now its all about Arcade and the other types now has less value because of it
And i completely agree that friendly tournaments should stay as you cant get anything for it anyway.

Can't even imagine the outrage if this happened
the only thing i will say though is who cares if its not 128 players like the old days, there is never that many entries anyway and more thats in harder it is to win anyway.

The micro and friendly tournaments are not counted on your profile, if that's what you mean. They are there just to give people something simple and quick to play for.
I would say most tournaments at peak times are more competitive now than they were about 2 months ago before the "ranked tourneys" update. I can't speak for how it was back in the beginning. Almost every tournament now has several of the top-ranked players in it.
I think the current system is fine AS LONG as micro and friendly tourneys are not included in your tourney stats. Also, don't forget that "back in the day" when tournaments weren't ranked, there were a massive number of dq's in the early rounds- not the case anymore.

true but you have to agree there are too many arcade ones in there?
i think mike meant before ranked came out there wasn't so many tournies as there is now so it was more of an achievement to win one (still so in the game types where there are less game types), now however there are 36+ tournaments in one day and roughly 2 thirds of that is Arcade alone so i can see where mike is coming from, its not so much of an achievement to win one now if it counts or not.

One tournament per day. At a random time of a random game type!
It would be an achievement to win a tournament then
It would be an achievement to win a tournament then
22:56 Tue 8 Feb 11 (GMT) [Link]
But the tournaments that are counted have been the same for a long time now!
For at least 8 months there has been a tourney every hour.

haha would be class actually
would like to see that happen, now that would be an achievement, do you mean like random we have currently with a random time or the game picks say Original and all the tournament is Original until the next day?
wouldn't be too bad if micro wasn't there

WhoCares you're missing my point completely, if they're not added to your profile(which I agree with) what's the point of even having them? Friendly tournaments especially.
The tournaments back when there was 5 or 6 were at peak times and often hit full capacity with a cracking tournament to be held!
You also say several of the top ranked enter, several? Is that all? The majority of top ranked players used to join tournaments to play the most talented and attempt to beat them, not just join on the hope only one or two other top ranked players had.
This also is what would be boosted by lowering the number a day, it would be seen as more important to win thus more would join thus making it a better tournament all round imo.

Friendly Tournaments:
For those that wish to play tournament just for fun, and for newbies in an event who wish to gain tournament practice.

23:20 Tue 8 Feb 11 (GMT) [Link] yeah i mean just one tournament of a particular game type (arcade, regular, original, carom or maybe even a random tournament) selected at random to occur any time between 12am and 11.59pm.
But it was really only a joke suggestion.

Do you have to post things like that? Or are you just naturally condescending? I know why they're there, I just see very little point in them being so if there not recorded.

I didn't realize I was being condescending. I took that statement word for word from several other threads about the reason for friendly tournaments. They would by definition not be "just for fun" if they were recorded. That's why they exist.
I also think that more tournaments gives a wider number of players a chance to achieve something, which is a good thing. Why should every single tournament be won by one of the top players?
Must've been before my time, because as long as I've been here there are usually not more than a few top players online at the same time, certainly not even close to most.

If you read back, just like almost all updates, the recent torunament updates are all the results of users requests and discussions on the forums.
Friendly tournaments have been especially heavily campaigned for by some.
Also, do not forget the Micro tournaments are new, and will evolve and slot in as is appropriate over time (I suspect they will stay similar in timing but perhaps revolve through disciplines?). Their popularity is unquestionable.
The fact is there are more people playing more tournament games than ever before, so it can hardly be described as a "downfall"

If you think the thread is about the tournament numbers that is in "downfall" you have me mistaken, my point is tournaments mean nothing anymore, too many players can we them with not batting an eye lid, it's the achievement that is in downfall. Micro tournaments are up there with the worst ideas on this site, how on Earth you can say their popularity is unquestionable is absolutely comical, there are 8 entrants it's hardly going to be a ghost town is it! Also, I have read back. As you should really know, I'm an avid forum reader and I don't ever remember a request for micro tournaments.
I'm not saying every single tournament should be won by a top player, because frankly not everyone was! The confidence it gave players beating the top players was unrivaled.

9/10 of the top ranked players used to enter tournaments that's how popular winning one was, no like you say it's very rare to see any of the top 10 ranked in tournaments(bar yourself).

Welcome back mike lol!
But I agree with the fact you saying What is the point in having friendly/Micro Tournys because they don't make no difference just gives the chance of the average getting 120 points and to be honest it's not like it's going win you the 'Day Medal' is it?
And also back in the olden days the tournaments would be full (Can't remember last time I seen a full tourny) But people don't need to come on to enter like they used to before because when you got like 18 tournys a day not very far from the next.

I think the friendly tourneys are a good idea as the top players probably don't want to enter these so it gives a chance to the 'weaker' players and newbies to use these tourneys as a 'training' ground.
Then when they are ready they can compete against the big boys and if they win a tourney it will be on their profile as a deserved recognition of their achievement.
