Indeed Rooney's goal was good, but I would put the following ahead of it:
Robert Carlos' free-kick versus France in 1997 ... it swerved almost 5m around the wall and left Barthes just staring as it nipped inside the post.
Any of a number of free-kicks by the ex-Lyons striker Juninho
Gazza's FA Cup semi final free-kick against Arsenal from 30 yards - screaming into the top corner, leaving Seaman stranded
....and take you pick from Messi's goals last season!
For individual talent, he is so far above Rooney... the ball is almost tied to his foot at times.
(all to name but a few lol)

This is an old one, and the video quality, lets face it is crap,

Totally disagree mate. All the goals you have pointed out have been from a dead ball situation. That is far easier to control the ball kicking it from stationary. The sheer height rooney jumped to even connect with the ball was something to behold.

This sent tingles up my back, and made me spontaneously cheer.
The technique is superb

Bit like Rooneys, anyone remember this from Amr Zaki?

Rooney volley vs Newcastle was quite good and Bergkamp where he did that sexy turn then slotted home, arguably one of the best goals I have seen technique wise. Ryan Giggs where he ran the whole length of the left side of midfield and smashed into the roof of the net vs Arsenal I think. Steven Gerrard has a nack for good goals also. John Arne Riise against united (free kick) Fabio Aurelio against Chelsea also free kick, not because of skill technique or anything but just because he outsmarted the keeper and made a show of him.
Will try think of more.
