What do you mean, it's a pointless discussion? I mean, Formula 1 has never had drivers in the same car, and we'll never see a test of drivers competing in the same cars, so why not imagine something new?
Maybe we're talking about different things. I was saying, it's pretty pointless to argue about who's the best driver, when there will never be a true test of driving ability. They'll always be tied to their car's performance. So the discussion is all speculation and will never be solved. Fairly unsatisfying I think.

Ever seen Top Gear?

All in the same car, no performance difference. Lewis Hamilton is the 'best' driver.

Lewis Hamilton - 1:42:9
Mark Webber - 1:43:1
Sebastian Vettel - 1.44.0
Rubens Barichello - 1.44.3

Ever heard of The Race of Champions either? Drivers from rally, F1, Nascar etc. go head to head in the same cars. The current champion is Romain Grosjean so apparently he's the best . Also, the German team of Vettel and Schumacher have won every year since 2007.

I hope Schumacher makes a full recovery!

Wish I could go to the Race of Champions again. :/

And haha, Hamilton's brilliant Top Gear lap time last year said it all. He's the 'best driver' in the sport...

Just heard that Eddie Irvine, 1999 Formula 1 Runner-up, has been sentenced for 6 months for brawling over an Italian man at a nightclub in Milan. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

It's not yet clear whether he will serve time in jail, though.

lol seriously guys, you're judging skill based on one lap in Top Gear...?
That just shows how much there really is a need for a fair competition. Won't happen!

Interesting that drivers get to choose their own personalised race numbers, as in NASCAR and MotoGP. Vettel has decide to go for 5 instead of 1, and Crashtor Maldonado has gone for 13. LL!

RIP John Button Sorry to hear, Jenson.

After seeing two cars, I am actually disappointed with both the finger structure (a broken nose) and the loop structure (a giant hose pipe). Too ugly and not what I expected.

The ugly factor is just too much now. It feels like being on a sick planet...

This season will be... interesting I suppose. Reliability too big a factor due to too many changes at once. Only two or three cars did more than a lap or two in testing

I agree. The changes are unfair and a step too far. All the controversy over the past few years about the rules are unnecessary, and they disinterest fans.

Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren seem promising, though.

Red Bull's troubles continue as Ricciardo's car breaks down without finishing a lap. Vettel only managed about 10 laps in two days and not even one completed today. Not looking good

Terrible. Red Bull are going backwards.

Well done to Magnussen for setting the pace. McLaren are doing brilliant.

Also, what a laughable and disgraceful decision to award double points in the final race. FIA know it's controversial, and they should listen to the drivers, teams and fans, not just allow what they think is right or wrong. Bernie's plans to have 3 double-points is... well, 3 times worse. This is not the sort of effort to hold on to TV ratings and keep the sport exciting. I think they'll backfire, and a lot of people are going to lose interest in Formula 1 so badly that it will marginalize the sport.

The sport needs to be less controversial to keep the sport alive.

Here's an interesting fact I picked up from the Autosport magazine:

Formula 1's TV figures worldwide fell... by many - 50 million to be precise.

The French audience fell by 17 million.
