I just have a problem with the idea that you can progress 3,4,5 rounds and come out worse than when you started, what a waste of time.
You're still tying the two together.
If you're coming out worse than when you started, it means that you've beaten players that you're supposed to beat and you've lost to players that you're not supposed to lose to. No matter whether it's a tournament or not, you'll always come out with less rank than before!

I don't think "rank" or that sentence youv'e used means anything. In a 1 frame situation, it is very difficult to predict the outcome, a novice can just as easily smash the balls around and win a game than me playing positional snooker. I have no right to win any game just because of my ranking, it just means I've worked harder, so I think less attention really does need to be paid towards "ranking"..

and if you think about it tournaments are almost identical to normal ranked games say you played in normal ranked game.

you was 850...

they was 640, 800, 750, 900

say you lost to 900 (minus 4) so thats 846, beat 800 (plus 4) 850, beat 750 (plus 3) thats 853 then lose to 640 (minus 7) so thats 846.

in a tournament it would be

842, 850, 856, 842.

so its not that much different

And that is fundamentally the problem about rank, and why reaching a Final can land you worse off. Its a little bit too black and white and there is not enough caution attached, apart from the newbie rule but I dont play them anyway.

So how would any comparative ranking system ever work?
All of them work on the principle that if you beat a good player then you get lots of points and if you beat a lower player, you gain fewer points.
If you lose to a top player you lose few points, if you lose to a lower-ranked player you lose lots of points. That's how it is in normal ranked games and it's the same in tourneys.

Yeah, one word though I keep coming back towhocaresx8x, SCALE. And dgen, excellent maths as usual but its unlikely for me I meet many 800's + until well into the finals within a highly populated tournament

Yes, I understand you think the scale should be lower. However, even if you lower the scale, you would still come out with a lower rank at the end of the tournament if you produce the same results!
The only difference would be that instead of being 4 down, you would maybe be 2 down.

On the flipside, you would also come out with less profit if you went undefeated.

also if you play a newbie you don't win/lose as much rank as normal so potentially newbies can save your rank.

once i think i saw a 900 play a 675 newbie after the game they got like 6 points and the virtuoso only lost 1 point compared to the 6 or 7 they should normally lose

im curious ,what kind of system allows a person to progress through a tournie, advance to say the semi_final,lose ,then be worse off than when you started, ridiculous, you can shift stats about all you like but this situation does and will continue to happen,so what incentive is there to enter tournies, only a handfull of players are now capable of winning tournies, and this shows up in the rankings, look at the top ten in arcade,it hardly ever changes, same old names, before double points ,and when tournies were for zero points, the top ten in arcade changed every day, this is a fact just check out old rankings prior the changes .it would seem the tournapoints suit only the best and most consistant players, the rest of us have to play for fun ,knowing that even trying to play a tournie ,no matter how far we get will leave us furthur behind than when we started,my humble but true feelings

I'm not sure why people seem to think that you end up worse off every time. This only happens if you lose to players with crap rankings and only beat players with crap rankings.
If you win a game against someone higher-ranked, you win lots more points than usual as well!

All you have to do is beat the lower-ranked players.

Again, the tournament and the rankings are two different things. Every tourney game is also a ranked game. So it's natural that you lose lots when you lose to a poor player.

That is only fair if everyones rank reflects their skill level. However in most cases thanks to resetters and the daily points reduction it has barely any relation at all.

Tbh, just ease of your ranking points, its only a game they arnt your meat and 2 veg they dont need protecting 24/7, If your good enough to get too 800 points then your good enough to win the 6 points that you just lost to a 715 ranked user!...
