Before Fred had time to give the last digit, Bill had punched it in and opened the safe. "That was a lucky guess!" exclaimed Fred. "No it wasn't" replied Bill, smiling.
How did Bill know the combination and what was the last digit?

Buddytobud, last digit was 8? Because of the 81 bus? If I read it correctly, he just put 81 on to the end of the 8 digits he already had?

No sorry, that is also incorrect. He did in fact add the 81 to the number in the usual manner.

I've heard this one before so I know the answer but, to be honest, I never thought it entirely fitted but there you go - artistic licence I presume.
