As I didn't state the directions of the turns, you can safely assume that it doesn't matter. Also, you can assume that the yacht does not make any unnecessary manoeuvres (such as spinning on the spot or backtracking) that are not stated in the puzzle.

in which case logic would suggest every part of the boat has travelled the same distance.

A Coffin or Headstone perhaps?

Two possibilities: either the rope was tied to the horse's tail or (more likely) the other end of the rope wasn't tied to anything
