my a level maths is rusty but my maths teacher missus said that the volume remaining of any sphere with a six-inch-long hole through it must be the same as the volume remaining of a six-inch-diameter sphere with a hole of zero diameter drilled through it.

Absolutely correct and well remembered. Just thought it would be nice for the others to know why there seemed to be an error, if they didn't know that fact (which could have been deduced from the poem)

There are three switches downstairs. Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position.
How would you identify which switch corresponds to which light bulb, if you are only allowed one trip upstairs?

Four members of a band are walking to a night concert. They decide to take a shortcut, but must cross a bridge. Luckily they have one flashlight. Because of the varying size of their instruments, it takes each member a different amount of time to cross the bridge - it takes the first person one minute, the second person two minutes, the third person five minutes and the fourth person ten minutes. They must cross the bridge in pairs, traveling at the slower speed so if the one minute person went with the ten minute person, it would take a total of ten minutes. Since there is only one flashlight, one person must come back across the bridge, then another pair can cross. They only have 17 minutes to cross the bridge and still get to the concert on time. What order should they cross to get everyone across and get to the concert?

You are correct, just had a quick look and it was asked 3 years ago on here. So, try this one instead (let me know if it has already been asked lol)
Your job is to measure 45 minutes, if you have only two cords and matches to light the cords.
1. The two cords are twisted from various materials and so their different segments can burn at different rates. (so you can't just measure along the cords)
2. Each cord burns from end to end in exactly one hour.
Describe your way of measuring the 45 minutes.

Just to say there is literally no thinking you have to do on this. Just what text is in the post.
Hmmm, finally got rid of the headache but still a bit confused on this. However, I'll tell you where my first thoughts are ....
Just read the last line

I went on a treasure hunt, following my map and spade in hand I trek through the summer heat looking for 'x' in relation to my map. Unfortunately it's hard to read and the worn out map has made finding 'x' harder.
It's been 2 days now, and i'm running out of water. the desert dust has made map reading even worse and the x is barely visible, but I must go on.
I must dig on 'X' but where?

The first paragraph is in the past tense and says that it made finding X harder which implies that there is the possibility that X has been found.
The next part is in the present tense and says that the X is barely visible, but that implies that X can be seen (there is never any indication that there is an X on the map itself only how to find it).
If the 'go on' means to go on the X, then I would say to dig at your feet.

In that case, I would say the centre of the 'X'
