There are three switches downstairs. Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position.
How would you identify which switch corresponds to which light bulb, if you are only allowed one trip upstairs?

you turn on switch A and leave for 10 minutes or so. Turn off A and then turn on switch B. Quickly run upstairs, the bulb that is on is switch B, the bulb that is cold is switch C, the bulb that is warm is switch A

Your job is to measure 45 minutes, if you have only two cords and matches to light the cords.

1. The two cords are twisted from various materials and so their different segments can burn at different rates. (so you can't just measure along the cords)
2. Each cord burns from end to end in exactly one hour.

Describe your way of measuring the 45 minutes.

Can the cords burn from both ends so that one cord lit at both ends is burnt out in 30 mins ?

A couple more quick nautical ones....

What is the (approximate) length of the longest rope on a yacht and where is it situated?

and

A 40' sailing yacht is berthed at Southampton with the bow facing land. It reverses out of its berth until it is clear of the jetty and sails completely around the world from west to east and returns to Southampton where it reverses into its original berth with the stern now facing the land. Which part of the yacht has travelled the furthest (if any) and why?
