good point but how about this;
somewhere there is a list of bannings without mentioning names but saying like how many people have been banned for abuse, swearing etc. eg
banning
24 people have been banned for constant swearing
56 people have been banned for abuse
13 people have been banned for spamming

The point of displaying names and reasons is to avoid confusion/gossip, and as a deterrent.
drunk_lass made an excellent point a few posts ago. Which is that the reasons for bannings invariably become public anyway.
farren also made an excellent point. when people are booted, the reason is displayed, so why not when they are banned?
Why favour banned users (and it takes a LOT to become banned, as most long term users know. on an extremely rare occasion someone may be booted for one slipup, but bannings are not treated lightly)
Another possible compromise is to display the reason for banning on the users profile.
This way, you prevent curious enquiry's. You prevent banned users being the subject of gossip and rumours which is actually beneficial to them.
This also eliminates the possibility previously raised of users being deliberately offensive just to end up on "the list"

why are people so curious anyways? if people dont get banned for one slip up, you'd think it would become obvious over time that one's behaviour is bad enough for banning. ie. extensive offensive language. if you're that close to the person that you're severely affected by their banning, and need to know why they were banned, you should have another way to get in touch with them.
i'm still really not seeing the point in posting the bannings

wouldn't this idea be classed as naming and shaming people who are banned ?

ok let me put it this way!!!!!!!!
"spinner banned for sexual harrassment"
Even though you may have a completely untarnished record previously, You type something that was taken in the wrong context, you get banned.
Now would you like to be known as a sexual harraser for the rest of your life? NO is the answer.
Leave things as they were before, nobody needs to know anything!!!!!!!!!

I see no reason whatsoever to change the way things are. No benefit to anyone, and a few potential bad effects.

This is a great example of why this could be a good thing.
If i, or anyone, were banned for such a reason it is only right that other site users should be aware. (there is no way that sexual harrasment can be something "taken the wrong way!)
Regardless of previous record, someone commiting such an offence deserves to be banned.
allornothing mentioned naming and shaming again, well its not, because the user is banned from the site.
If anything, it adresses the current double standard that booting reasons are displayed whilst bannings are not.
As farren said, which sums it all up, if you dont want info displayed, dont break the rules.
Very simple indeed.

I don't see that this thread is going anywhere. Some like it; some don't. There is no 'right' or 'wrong'. It's all a matter of opinion.
End of story.

Many good idea's and improvements have come from discussions like these.
Lets simplify.
Is it fair that banned users are favoured over minor offenders (boot reason shown, banned reason hidden)?
How can one argue the point that if you dont want such information displayed, then dont break the rules?
The adverse reactions to this are simply serving to prove how good a deterrent this would be.
Naming and shaming is non-existant as the user is banned, and it goes without saying that in the event a ban is reversed for any reason the information is removed.

I think we should just capp this thread because we are just getting YES and NO answers !

No point in capping a sensible and worthy debate. Thats what the forums are for after all

and it goes without saying that in the event a ban is reversed for any reason the information is removed.
By the time a ban is reversed, the information would have been public long enough for a whole shed load of members to see it.
So the member who was banned and allowed back will always be remembered for what they had done in a minute of stupidity and not for what good they may have done the site.

I think pretty much this is a non-runner. Wouldnt it be nifty if we had a option for a poll on this forum?

a poll would be a awesome feature i mentioned it on pool once i think
this idea has pros and cons
obviously i dont know what you were banned for drunklad but you have done alot for the site and it would be harsh.
however its very annoying when you log in and one of your snooker buddies has been banned and you dont know what for.
im kinda split on this one
maybe banning reasons should be displayed if you are persistently booted (which im guessing you were not drunk) to serve as a warning to others.

i agree with there is no right or wrong answers...everyone has there own opinion and theres nothing wrong with expressing opinions.
there is no point capping this thread as it is just a debate. its not like anyone is arguing or throwing abuse or going against the rules
nice idea...polls would save space and time on the forums
