Bringing this back up as 2009 season is fast approaching. 29th March so only a few weeks. Haven't even seen any F1 or heard news since last so what does everyone know and what are your opinions?

Mods, Is it possible we could have a new thread 'Official Formula 1 2009 Chat' or something like that.

Don't wanna make the thread if it's gonna be capped straight away.

Can't see what was wrong in the first place that prompted the change in poitns system.

They couldn't risk Hamilton winning again. By doing this, it will be very unlikely to have scenes like the final race last year. The excitement, which was low in the first place, has all but gone.

Why on earth couldn't they have taken on board FOTA's suggestion of increasing the differential between the points awarded? It would certainly have achieved some measure of what they are looking for (more overtaking) without the danger of causing the possibility of anomalies such as a Force India driver (no offense) only finishing 3 races (say) with wins (due to unfortunate circumstances) and being crowned champion just because everybody else has only got 2 (and a raft of seconds an thirds etc.). It is unlikely scenario of course and the winner will probably be a deserving champion (Schumacher for instance would have won all his anyway), but why oh why such a ludicrous change?

I agree with the increase in points change awarding points like 15 to the winner i think.

Whats wrong with the person with the most wins being crowned champion? I, personally, believe it wil encourage overtaking, and like you said buddytobud, may result in someone who isn't Mclaren or Ferrari winning for once.

Surely that can only be a good thing?

My first thought when it was announced was it's a good chance a ferrari would win it.

But not long to go now so gonna be good.

One driver from the likes of Force India, Toro Rosso etc. aren't going to get enough wins to give themselves a look in for the title.

My first thought when they changed it to encourage people going for the win, as you mentioned Buddytobud, why not just give more points and therefore reward the winner more? Rather than one driver comes out of the race with something to be happy about compared the the 8 in the past?

It will be one of the top cars winning wether it's on points or wins, but when the points scheme was in place there was always other little battles going on like there is in the Premier League, they wont be around anymore.

Well, to be fair, that's not exactly true as the race wins only determines the champion and not subsequent places which remain as before.

I did say it was an unlikely scenario and it is likely to not change the results dramatically - the top cars will still be the top cars. I was objecting to the concept of replacing a time honoured system which rewards consistency throughout the season and overall performance with one that can be biased by fluke occurrences and produce freak results.

Even though I'm a Ferrari fan, I think it is good for the sport to have other winners - but by performance and not by fluke. I think it would be very bad for the sport if this were to happen and people would be saying things like "Yeah he may be World Champion, but there is no way he deserved it - its all down to pure luck in the end."

Edit: typos

There is an article on the Beeb saying the powers that be have decided not to implement the new points system rule and defer it until the 2010 season

Well spotted the article in question is http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7955790.stm

Some sense at last from the FIA and I'm sure that with increased pressure from FOTA the increased points differential will eventually be adopted.

The only problem is now I'll have to get a telly set up in the loo or reduce the liquid intake!

Apart from that can't wait
